Church of San Salvatore al Monte – Firenze

The convent of San Francesco al Monte alle Croci is located in the Oltrarno area, just a few steps away from the church of San Miniato al Monte in Florence.

The Franciscan place of worship was built and completed within the first half of the fifteenth century, on the same site where, at the beginning of the century, stood a chapel perhaps dedicated to the Florentine Saints Cosmas and Damian.

On the initiative of the Quaratesi family and the Art of Calimala, the structure was rebuilt; the architect responsible for the project was Cronaca, or Simone del Pollaiolo, starting from 1499.

During the siege of 1529 the church suffered considerable damages that caused an increasingly worse condition of the structures, to the point that the friars had to move to Ognissanti during the seventeenth century.

Today, a community of Friars has returned to the place of origin and the important Franciscan complex, which preserves works of great historical and artistic importance and which was appreciated by Michelangelo Buonarroti, is the subject of restoration and enhancement projects.
