Church of Santa Maria Assunta – Corciano

Embraced by the castle’s citywall of the small village of Corciano, near Perugia, the church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin to Heaven was originally built in the first half of XIII century.
The building preserved its original shape until 1848, when the parish-prior Costanzo Pelagresti promoted the entire refurbishment of the church. After the restoration, on October, 26 1851, the church was consecrated by Archbishop Gioacchino Pecci, the future Pope Leo XIII.
In 1870, according to the project by the architect Lardoni from Perugia, a medieval tower was turned into the neoclassical bell tower of the church.
The church, with a single nave covered by a gabled roof, ends in the raised apse and is covered by barrel and cross vaults; the counter-façade is occupied by the choir, which also includes the pipe organ, under which the Baptismal Font is.
