Monastery of Sant’Agnese – Perugia

The Monastery of Sant’Agnese was founded in 1329 by a community of nuns coming from the near monastery of Sant’Agnese di Boneggio; the area was bequested by a citizen of Perugia, Paolo d’Angelo, which left his properties for the creation of a franciscan complex, as written in his last will (1305).

The Third Order of S. Maria di Valfabbrica lived here from 1428 to 1900, and, after 1900, the nuns of the Order of Santa Chiara settled there,

establishing a cloistered convent.

The small church of Sant’Agnese, annexed to the monastery, preserves canvas dating back to the twelth century and painted by local artists and the beautiful fresco by Perugino depicting Our Lady of Grace between Saint Anthony Abbey and Saint Anthony of Padua (1522), probably commissioned by the nuns Eufrasia and Teodora, who are portayed on the Virgin’s sides in the fresco.
