Our Lady of Consolation – Perugia
In 1496 the brotherhood of the Disciplinati of Santa Maria Novella (which in 1801 merged with that of San Pietro Martire) commissioned the realization of a table for the altar of the oratory located in the village of Porta Sant’Angelo to Perugino, paid to the painter sixty florins in two instalments of ten and fifty florins each.
The artwork shows a graceful Madonna with Child, typical in the artistic production of Perugino; behind them, some of the confreres are kneeling in prayer, neatly arranged in the background.
During the requisitions on behalf of the Emperor Napoleon, the Altarpiece was kept at the home of a Disciplinato, then in 1801 it was moved in the district of Porta San Pietro and, finally, due to demanialization of ecclesiastical goods as a result of the unification of Italy, it was transferred to the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria.
The work is preserved at the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria.
