Saint Bernard welcomes Christ descending from the Cross – Former convent of S. Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi – Florence
The work is stylistically attributed to Perugino (1494-96) or to one of his students, Sperandio di Giovanni, who should have realized it around 1506.
The composition, where the Cross is the central element, opens on a hilly landscape that shows a Renaissance city; at the foot of the cross, there is the skull of Adam, iconography recurring in this type of theme.
The fresco has been detached from its original position: this has allowed to also see the preparatory drawing (sinopia), currently exposed in the same wall.
The work is preserved in the former convent of Santa Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi in Florence.
