The Virgin with Saint John the Evangelist and Mary Magdalene adoring the Child – Pierpont Morgan Library – New York
On the background of a gentle hilly landscape, the Virgin, kneeling at the center of the composition, is depicted in adoration of her son: she is in fact slightly turned towards the Child, laying in the foreground on the left. Mary joins her hands in prayer, her face is visible only for three quarters; the body is hidden by a red robe embroidered in gold on the edges, partially covered by a turquoise tunic, also profiled in gold, whose abundant fabric rests on the ground and contrasts with the candid skin of the chubby body of the Child.
On the left, Saint John the Evangelist turns his gaze to Jesus as he crosses his arms to his chest as a sign of devotion; on the other hand, Saint Mary Magdalene looks at the viewer, hinting at a slight smile. The composition creates a quiet, intimate and calm atmosphere.
The work dates back to about 1503. The panel is preserved at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York.
