Transfiguration of Christ – Perugia
The work, commissioned by the widow of Francesco Graziani, Andreana Signorelli, is intended for the church of Santa Maria dei Servi in the heart of Perugia, right next to the houses of the Baglioni; the entire complex, including the church, was razed to the ground soon after the Salt War of 1540, due to the building of the colossal Rocca wanted by Papa Paolo III Farnese to reconfirm the papal supremacy over the city, that was part of the State of the Church at the time.
The Transfiguration was then transferred to the Family Chapel in Santa Maria Nuova, in the district of Porta Sole.
The realization of the panel was commissioned to Perugino in 1517, who was now old and at the end of his career: the style of the painting is consistent with Vannucci’s last pictorial phase.
The work is preserved at the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria.
