The Prophet Jeremiah and The Prophet Isaiah – Musée des Beaux-Arts – Nantes
The two tondos were originally part of the dismembered Polyptych of San Pietro, and, according to the reconstructions, were located on the sides of the cymatium depicting the Eternal Blessing (now in Lyon).
The tondo on the left depicts the prophet Jeremiah, while the right one shows the prophet Isaiah: in both cases, the figures seem almost suspended on a floor of clouds, the bodies are wrapped in heavy, strongly draped cloths whose colors are bright, while some parchments bearing some prophecies unroll around them.
Some parts of the polyptych, already dismembered in the last decade of the sixteenth century by the architect Martelli, in charge of the renovation works of the church of San Pietro (for which it was designated) were transported to France in 1797 because of the Napoleonic requisitions and never returned to Italy. The two tondos are preserved at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes.
