Madonna enthroned between Saint James and Saint Augustine – Church of Sant’Agostino – Cremona
According to records, Perugino never actually was in Cremona. Historians wonder about the place where the painting may have been executed, advancing the hypothesis that the painter completed the work during his Venetian journey, considering the lagoon suggestions, such as the colors that look to Venetian colorism. However, since the compositional scheme is very close to that of the Sacred Conversation of the Uffizi, it is also possible that it was realized in Florence.
At the center of the representation, the Virgin, holding the child Jesus, is seated on a wooden throne, whose front bears the artist’s signature and the date of completion of the painting; on the sides, Saint Augustine, dedicatee of the church, and Saint James.
The work is preserved at the Church of Sant’Agostino in Cremona.
