Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta – Naples
The Duomo of Naples, named after Santa Maria Assunta, was built by order of Carlo d’Angiò in 1294, on the site of the two ancient basilicas of Santa Restituta and Stefania, the latter totally destroyed. The building, in Gothic style but with subsequent additions, has a Latin cross plan and three naves. Among the most important chapels, the Chapel of the Treasury of San Gennaro was built in the mid-seventeenth century in baroque style to guard the important relic of the blood of the Saint, the object of miracles and heartfelt city celebrations. The remains of San Gennaro, patron saint of the capital of Campania, are located in the crypt. Another peculiarity is the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte, located to the right of the apse, considered the oldest in Europe.
In the part below the church there is an archaeological area that shows evidence of the Greek-Roman and early Christian city.
