The Art Institute – Chicago

The Art Institute of Chicago was founded in 1879 as both a museum and a school for fine arts; in 1893 the museum was moved to its current location, at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Adams Street, in a building designed in neoclassical style: Edward Kemeys sculpted the two iconic bronze lions that still flank the main entrance.

The vast collection covers various artistic fields, from Chinese bronzes to contemporary design and textiles to art installation, and owning almost 300,000 works of art is the second art museum in the United States after the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
